Oliver E. Hazard was born in 1836 in Shirley, Massachusetts. He was the son of Emerson Hazard and Caira Boston.
Oliver married Emeline (Messer) Hazard (1839-1916), a white woman whose grandfather, (Jonathan Messer (abt.1760-1841)), was a Revolutionary War Veteran. They married sometime after 1865 when her first husband died of disease. Oliver and Emeline had two sons and one died young.
Oliver died on July 13, 1896 in Leominster, Massachusetts. His death record shows that he was a farmer who died of dysentery at the age of 57 and 9 months. Oliver was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, Massachusetts.
In 1850, he is attending school, probably in or near Townsend, Massachusetts.
Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 35 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 22 December 1863 in Townsend, Massachusetts. He was wounded in action on 20 February 1864 at the Battle of Olustee. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
His brother Horace and first cousins Henry and Theodore Hazard also served in the 54th Massachusetts. His brother Nahum served with the 55th Massachusetts.
