Biography

Anthony Mazzarella is born 14 September 1897 in Massachusetts, the son of Leonardo Mazzarella and Felica Colarusso.^[1]

Anthony, age 3, appears in the 1900 federal census living on Fleet St in Boston with his parents, Leonardo, 50 (b. 1850), and Maria, 36, and siblings Frank, 20, Jennie, 14, Margaret, 13, Ernesto, 5, and Carmela, 1. The three youngest children, Ernesto, Anthony, and Carmela, were born in MA and the rest in Italy. His parents have been married for 21 years. Maria has had ten children of whom six are living. Leonardo, who immigrated in 1890 and is a naturalized citizen, is a produce salesman. His wife and older children joined him in 1891. Frank is also a produce salesman. Jennie, 14, is a candy maker. Margaret and Ernesto are in school.^[2]

Their address is 28 Fleet St., from at least 1902-1918.^[3]

Anthony Mazzarella, with a matching birth date to the birth record above, registers for the WWI draft. He lives at 28 Fleet St in Boston. He is 20 years old, a truck driver working for Frank Mazzarella at 72 Leyden St, Boston. His closest contact is Felicia Mazzarella, his mother, at the same address. The registrar reports on 10 September 1918 that Anthony is of medium height and build with dark brown eyes and black hair.^[4]

Anthony Mazzarella (1897-1953) and his wife, Margaret Santaniello (1900-1968), are buried in a family plot in St. Michael's Cemetery in Springfield, MA, with Margaret's sister, Adelaida Santaniello and her husband, Giuseppe Scibelli.^[5] Giuseppe Scibelli is a known associate of the Springfield Mafia under Sam Cufari.
