Biography

George Csapp Jr (later Copp) was born on April 15, 1897, in Melrose, Massachusetts, to George Csopp and Ella Schaffer.[1] George Jr was one of 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. He was raised in the Catholic Church. He left school after the first year of high school to help support the family.[2][3]

In 1917, George was inducted into the US Army as a private in Machine Gun CO 5th, Infantry, Massachusetts National Guard.[4] He did not see battle and was honorably discharged due to a medical disability for chronic brochitis.[5][6]

In 1921, George enrolled as Federal Vocational Student in Extension division of University of Florida (Gainsville) in Agriculture. It is unclear if he attended in person or by correspondence, but family lore suggests he spent some time in Florida about this time. His brother John left home to try his luck in California about this time. George worked as a machine operator and packer at a shipping company.

In 1923, his mother died of cancer at age 46. His brother John came to Melrose for the funeral, but returned to California. In October 1924, George was the best man for his sister Anna Helen's wedding to William Barbour.

Starting in 1929, George worked as fireman for the Fire Department, City of Melrose. In later years he was the phone dispatcher. Over the years, he invested in common stock for various new enterprises, but none of them panned out.

He married first Agnes Ilma Wilde in 1927 in Middlesex, Massachusetts.[7] They settled in Melrose, first living at 45 Leonard Road, then renting on Trenton Street and Rendell Place.[8][9]

In 1939, Agnes and George purchased a summer home in South Kingston, New Hampshire, abutting property owned by her relatives.[10] About 1942, Agnes and George purchased a home at 35 Harvard Street, Melrose.[6]

Agnes died of heart disease in April 1955 at age 54. They had no children. A month later, George's father George Sr died at age 80.

George married widow Marie Fester Sheridan on March 30, 1957, in a Catholic ceremony in Melrose, Massachusetts.[11] Marie sold the Sheridan family home on Hunnewell Street and Marie and George then lived in his house on 35 Harvard Street. George became step-father to Marie's 9 children, with the youngest 5 living with them. George retired from the fire department a few years after the marriage.

Marie and George spent many summers with Marie's children and grandchildren at his camp in Kingston, New Hampshire.

George died on October 30, 1983, in hospital in Stoneham, Massachusetts, at the age of 86.[12][13][14] He was buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, with his first wife, Agnes Ilma.[15][16] Wife Marie survived him.
