Biography

Ireland Native
John Minchin was born in Ireland.

John Minchin was born in about 1670. He was the son of Charles Minchin and Elizabeth Walcot.

His father Colonel Charles Minchin had purchased a property called Annagh Castle in County Tipperary, Ireland from Solomon Cambie in 1679. He immediately leased it back to Cambie for 31 years.

When his father Charles died, the property was intended for John's oldest brother Thomas, who had sadly died young. Then his other brother Charles also died. Subsequently John inherited the property and became "John of Annagh" although he never lived there.

He married Frances Ryan (the daughter of Daniel Ryan). She passed away in 1696.

A settlement for the marriage between John and Penelope Cuffe was made on 27 April 1699.

They went on to have about nine children:

  1. Charles Minchin (b. 1700, d. 1736)
  2. Humphrey Minchin (d. abt. Sep 1748 - Feb 1749)
  3. John Minchin (d. 27 Mar 1746)
  4. Penelope Minchin
  5. Jane Minchin
  6. Boyle Minchin (d. circa 1768)
  7. Mary Minchin
  8. Ann Minchin
  9. Frances Minchin

His wife Penelope inherited Castle Inch, Inchmore, County Kilkenny, Ireland where they lived with their children.

He held the office of High Sheriff of County Tipperary in 1733 during the reign of George II, 1727–1760[1].

John Minchin passed away about 1734. His last will was dated 26 July 1733 and proved on 9 December 1734 [1]. A 'genealogical abstract' of the Will made by Sir William Betham reads:
