Lewis was born about 1799 in probably (Grayson County) Virginia or (Ashe County) North Carolina. (The 1850 & 1870 censuses list his birthplace as Virginia. The 1860 census lists his birthplace as North Carolina).
The earliest he has been found, thus far, is the 1830 census of Hawkins Co., TN[1]. He is listed directly next door to George Anderson (bef.1772-bef.1834).
He is also found on the 1836 tax list of Hawkins Co., TN[2] in Civil District 4.
He is also found on the 1840[3] census of Hawkins Co., TN.
He is found on a membership list of Blackwater Church in the 1840's[4].
The 1850 census[5] showed him in neighboring Hancock County.
He is found back in Hawkins Co., TN for the 1860[6] & 1870[7] censuses.
Lewis Anderson does have a FindaGrave memorial[8]. However, his death date is not sourced, his burial is listed as unknown, and none of the information in his biography is sourced. In fact, his listed parents and siblings appear to be contradicted by the historial record.
Lewis Anderson does not show on the 1880 mortality schedule of Hawkins or Hancock Counties in Tennessee - so the July 1879 death date appears to be unsourced.
The 1830 census of Hawkins County shows Lewis Anderson living directly next to George Anderson.
The 1800 census of Ashe Co., NC shows George Anderson with a son of the right age to be Lewis[9].
George Anderson had 2 sons who moved into Edmonson Co., KY - Matthew Anderson (abt.1800-1880) & Daniel Anderson (1815-1889).
In 1854, a Lewis Andrew Anderson married Permilia Nash in Edmonson Co., KY[10] - his birthplace is listed as War Gap, TN (within Hawkins County).
Lewis Andrew Anderson is first taxed within Edmonson Co., KY in 1851[11] - he is NOT found on the 1850 census of Edmonson Co., KY. A William Anderson is also taxed for the first time in 1851 in Edmonson County next to Lewis.
Lewis Andrew Anderson named his eldest daughter Zilphane[12].
Daniel Anderson, son of George Anderson, received a few letters from a James Christopher Anderson of Carroll Co., MO dated 1870 & 1871.
All letters open with "Dear Uncle." All letters mention James's brother, Lewis Anderson. And, they mention an elder brother, William, who had recently married (1870) - which was shocking because it was assumed that he would never marry (due to his advanced age). James also wished for his uncle Daniel to visit his parents in Tennessee. One letter mentioned "Aunt Polly" (Matthew Anderson's wife).
These letters tell us that James Christopher Anderson had brothers named Lewis Anderson & William Anderson. They tell us that they are nephews of Daniel Anderson & his brother Matthew Anderson, sons of George Anderson of Hawkins Co., TN. And, they tell us that their father is still alive and living in Tennessee in 1870.
All signs point to Lewis & Zilpha Anderson of Hawkins Co., TN being the father of James Christopher, Lewis Andrew, & William C Andersons. And, therefore, that Lewis Anderson is a son of George Anderson of Hawkins Co., TN.
