Biography

This profile is intended to represent the second wife of George Veazie, as identified in the 1900 census[1].

Uncertain Last Name at Birth

In 1900[2], Mary R Veazie is listed as the wife of George Veazie. Her birthdate is listed as Aug 1867. They are listed as married 12 years. Residing with them were three step-children, Allison, Mary and Willie, ages 1 to 11, and the birthplaces of their parents are all listed as Ohio (father) and Scotland (mother.)

However, it's unlikely they had been married 12 yrs in 1900, as "May Nurse," age 28, b Scotland, is listed just 5 years earlier, in the 1895 Minnesota state census[3], as the wife of Jerome A Nurse, age 30, b Ohio. Residing with them were their children: Marcellus, Allison, and Mary. The data for their children Allison and Mary Nurse in the 1895 census matches similar information for "step-"children Allison and Mary Nurse in the 1900 census. Further, as Jerome A Nurse appears to have been born ~1865, and a resident in Minnesota in 1895, he is likely the Jerome A Nurse whose headstone[4] in Otter Tail Co., Minnesota, indicates he died Sept 21, 1898.

Mary's maiden name is mentioned in several sources:

  • the marriage record[5] for Esther Jane Veazie lists her parents as George Veazie and Mary "Vanet"
  • the obituary[6] for their son George J Veazie, has "Born in Minnesota, he was the son of the late George and Mary Lamb Veazie."
  • a marriage record[7] for William V Nurse and Hazel L Henderson lists his parents as "George Nurse" and "Mary Vanett." That same form includes the signed consent (because William was under the age of 20) of "Mrs George Veazie."

The latter reference[8] can be considered as Mary's own testimony, as it lists William's mother as "Mary Vanett," and the consent certificate identifies William as the son of "Mrs George Veazie."

Mary may be the "Mary Vanette," age 17, b Scotland, in Glyndon, Clay Co., Minnesota, in 1885[9], residing in the household of Foster A Paige, among several others who appear to be boarders.

However, the mention of "Mary Lamb Veazie" in the obituary[10] of son George J Veazie is quite curious. The 1875, 1880, and 1885 censuses for Minnesota[11] indicate a possible connection between Vannett and Lamb families in Minnesota. That may be only due to a common birthplace. In particular, the families of David Vanet(t) and Charles Lamb resided in proximity to one another, and, in 1880[12], Mary Lamb, age 19, b Scotland, resided in the household of David Vanett. Note: the connections appear to precede 1880, the immigration date listed for Mary Veazie in the 1900 census[13].
