John J. Shanshala, 93, of Youngsville, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Rouse Warren Co. Home.
John was born April 4, 1921 in Warren Pa., a son to the late John and Mary (Groat) Shanshala. He graduated from Warren Area High School in 1939 and then went on to Penn State for 2 years, studying metallurgy. He served in the Army Air Force for 33 months as an instrument flight instructor during WWII. He worked for Struthers Wells in Warren for 43 years, becoming the general supervisor. John was a member of the St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in Youngsville, serving as an usher there for many years, the Youngsville American Legion Post 658, and the Knights of Columbus. John was an avid golfer at the Jackson Valley C.C. and enjoyed bowling on the Knights of Columbus bowling league for many years. He served as a volunteer at Warren General Hospital and very much enjoyed flying.
John is survived by his step children; Lou Ann (Richard) Lauger of Youngsville, Dawne (JD Kifer) Thomas of Jamestown, Tom Fitzgerald of Pittsfield and Shirley Danuski of N.C., his siblings; Michael (Corrine) Shanshala and Eleanor Shanshala, all of Warren, Betty Belko of Cleveland OH, Frank (Thelma) Shanshala of Sherwood, AK, and many nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his 3 wives; Minnie Anderson Shanshala, Elvia Hendrickson Shanshala and Carolyn Fitzgerald Shanshala, his siblings; Ann Petro, Frances Shanshala, Mary Brooks, Walter Shanshala, Helen Drapac, Jennie Sibble and Edward Shanshala.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church, 420 N. Main St. in Youngsville, with the Rev. Fr. John Neff, serving as celebrant. Friends are invited to call, one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s R.C. Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Luke’s R.C. Church. The Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Youngsville have been entrusted with all arrangements. Condolences to the family may be made at www.nelsonfuneralhome.net. [3]
