Grand Army of the Republic
Joseph Jimmerson was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Joseph was born in New York in 1826. He married Margaret Doty in Illinois on January 9th, 1854, and soon afterward they moved to Red Wing, MN. After two years there they then moved to Benton county, Iowa. Shortly after that they moved to Butler county, IA. When the civil war broke out in 1861, the Jimmersons already had 3 children which kept Joseph out of the war.

By 1864 it became increasingly difficult to enlist or draft new potential inductees into service. It was the Ohio governor, John Brough who concieved the idea of activating the state militia into federal service for only 100 days. Their mission would be to take over rear echelon duties, such as guarding prison camps and railroad lines, which would ultimately free up the more experienced soldiers to join the front lines. Brough then brought this idea to the governors of other states where it had been adopted as well. [1] They were known as the 100 day men and mainly consisted of older men who were ineligble for military service but who still wanted to serve. [2]

Joseph enlisted when he was 38 years old on May 11th, 1864. He reported for duty on June 1st and served as a PVT in Co E. of Iowa's 44th Infantry Regiment during American Civil War [3] He was mustered out on September 15, 1864.
