Biography

When Josephine Nichols was born in December of 1880, we find her father William Henry Nichols is a Laboror, married to Mary Polly Ann Davis they already have one child; F.J.; aka Florida Jane, age two. And Josie's Grandma Davis; Lucinda / Anna Jane Lewis, widowed, age 50, is in their home. Josie's mother, Mary Polly, is named as Keeping House when Josie is born and though it is not stated, likely her father is working on a neighbors Farm.

August 15, 1897 at Logan, Arkansas Josie married William Turrentine. She was 17 and he 25. We have no image of the marriage record, only a transcription.

January 26, 1899 their first known child was born, Archie Turrentine. He may have been Archibald but even his 1918 WWI registration papers name him as 'Arch Turrentine'

In 1900, the first U.S. Federal Census Josephine is named; Josie Turrentine, at Roseville, Logan, Arkansas, age 20, married, mother to one.

April 19, 1910 Josie and William's family has grown considerably and the age difference between Josie and William is now 9 years, not 6 as was stated on their marriage record. William is 38, Josie 29, Archie 11, Ernest 9, Charley Turrentine 6, Harvey 4 and Lavada Turrentine 1. So far, this Wiki member has found no other records for Ernest, other than the 1910 Census. It is believed that son Charley died the same year as his mother, as death records were found for both names in the same area. According to U.S. Federal Census records for 1910 as transcribed for Ancestry.com, the family surname is Qunneline, it is in fact Turrentine and corrections have long been submitted. Josephine is named Jossie Qunneline in the transcription of the Census.

The Arkansas Death Index with Josie's name on it states she died at Franklin Co. on February 18, 1914, Death Certificate # 00428. There is a death record on the same page for a Charley Turrentine, died at Logan Co., on March 5, 1914, Death Certificate # 02508, this may be Josie and Williams' son, unconfirmed.

In 1914 when Josephine Nichols, Josie Turrentine, passed at age 33, her eldest child Archie was age 15, son Harvey was 8, Lavada aka Polly, was 6 and Susie Turrentine was 3. For reasons unknown, Archie took over the guardianship of sisters Lavada and Susie, we find them living together on the Jan 26, 1920 U.S. Federal Census at Wittich, Franklin, Arkansas. Arch is Farming on his Own Account, they rent. this census asks not if the sisters attend school. A Kuykendall family lives next door, they will be in Arch's life in the future.

Josie's 8 year old son Harvey was the only child we find living with his surviving parent, William, in 1920. They lived at Roseville, Logan, Arkansas. William, widowed, was a Laborer at a Livery Barn while Harvey, age 14, attended school, son Harvey could read and write.
