James Norton was born at Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard in the Province of Massachusetts Bay on 23 May 1764, the son of Sylvester Norton and Lydia (Jones) Norton.[1] His birth does not appear in the published records of Edgartown, but after his parents moved to Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), in about 1789, they recorded his birth there.[2]
Marriages
James Norton of Chilmark, Massachusetts, married Olive Chase of Tisbury, Massachusetts, at Tisbury on 26 Mar 1789.[3][4]
James Norton and Hannah (Boyden) Atwood published their intention to marry at Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts) on 26 Nov 1818,[5] and they married at Livermore on 29 Nov 1818.[6]
Residence
About 1789, James and Olive Norton moved from Martha's Vineyard to Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts) with James' parents and his brothers Ransom Norton and Zebulon Norton.[7] He settled in the western part of the town.[8]
Death
The 1874 history of Livermore says that James Norton died in 1841.[8] According to the 1928 history of Livermore, he died in 1841 and "he and his first wife are buried in the Fuller [Cemetery] with nothing to indicate their graves."[9][10]
