Gustav Zobel is a Military Veteran. Served in the United States Army, 3rd Infantry 1882-1887 attaining Sergeant. Fought in the American Indian Wars.
Gustav Zobel migrated from Prussia to United States.
He came to the U.S. in 1881, aboard the ship Herder. [2]
He settled in Illinois, and joined the U.S. army to fight in the American Indian Wars. He first joined on 20 Feb 1882, and was discharged as Sergeant in 1887 at Fort Shaw, Montana. [3]
After his discharge, he gained employment at Bradner Smith & Company, a paper manufacturer based in Chicago. It was during this time that he was decorated with the gold "Distinguished Marksman" badge for his excellence in rifle shooting. [4] He was also a member of the Illinois National Guard, serving in the 2nd regiment.[5]
Gustav rejoined the army on 6 Feb 1890 and again fought in the Indian Wars, most notably at the Wounded Knee Massacre. He was discharged with rank of First Sergeant at Fort Koegh, Montana on 13 June 1892. [6] Four months later he married Margaret Ralston in Chicago. [7]
They had one son, Fred by 1900 and were living at 2532 W Huron St. in Chicago. Also living with them was Margaret's sister Marion. Gustav was working as a clerk. [8]
Another son, Robert was born in 1902. In 1910, the family was living at 4737 W. Superior St., and Gustav was now working as an auditor for the railroad. [9]
In 1920, they were living at 4845 W. Huron Street, in the house that would remain in the Zobel family for many years to come. Gustav and Margaret were living with their two sons, as well as their daughter in law Helen. [10] By 1930, the family had grown with the addition of two grandsons, Frederick and Phillip, as well as another daughter in law, Eleanor. [11]
Gustav passed away at the age of 78 on 8 Sept 1935. He was laid to rest on 11 Sept in Forest Home Cemetery in Forest park, Illinois. [12] He was given a military headstone a month later. [13]
Research Notes
The 1920 census is a disaster. "Jobl" should be Zobel. "Gusta" should be Gustav. "Ellen" should be Helen. "Albert" should be Robert. The only one they got right was Margaret.
The birth date of 3 Feb, 1858 on the Find-A-Grave memorial is also incorrect. There is no such date on the headstone. [14] All the other records clearly state Gustav's year of birth as 1857.
