Life Sketch of Edward Thompson Edward Thompson was born in September 1766 in Goshen, Connecticut. He was the fifth child of Elisha Thompson and Dorcas Wright. He had three older and three younger brothers, and one younger sister. When he was ten his Father was in the American Revolution, as a volunteer from Connecticut. Edward is said to have been interested in religion and at one time was a quaker.

Edward married Amanda Rhoda Smith in 1792, probably in Connecticut. They had five children; Harvey 1793, Ambrose 1795, Ezra 1797, Julius 1801, and Laura 1803. All their children are believed to have been born in Goshen. The Thompson home was on the east side of the road on School Hill in Goshen.

Sometime after 1803, Edward and Rhoda moved their family to Livonia, New York. Livonia was on the western edge of the finger lake area. It had been settled about 15 years before by Solomon Woodruff, a Presbyterian Minister from Litchfield, so Edward and Amanda were probably familiar with many of the settlers. Livonia was about 35 miles from Palmyra, New York and may have been where the Thompsons heard of the Mormon Church. While they were living in Livonia, their married son, Ambrose, drowned in Silver Lake, New York, about twenty miles southwest of Livonia.

In the 1820 Census, Edward and Amanda were living in Allegheny County, New York. By 1830, they were in Erie County, Pennsylvania livingclose to Mill Creek Township. Two of their sons, Ezra and Julius had brought their families and were living close by. In 1836 Edward and Amanda were living in Kirtland, Ohio. Their married sons, Ezraand Julius had also moved to Kirtland along with their families.

It is not clear if they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints first and then moved to Kirtland, or if they moved there and were then converted. But they were among the early members of the Church. In 1836, while they were in Kirtland, both Edward and Amanda received their patriartical blessings from Joseph Smith Sr. Edward was 69 at the time.

Edward followed the Church and eventually lived in Nauvoo, Illinois. The Nauvoo newspaper "Wasp" recorded his death in Nauvoo in September 1842. He was buried in the Cemetery there. He was 75 when he died.
