Biography

OBITUARY: Joe passed away the evening of Monday, March 17, 2014 at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings.

Norbert "Joe" Theodore Groeschel was born on November 28, 1928 in Serbin, Texas to Theodore Carl and Clara Louise (Menzel) Groeschel. He was baptized on December 9, 1928 and confirmed on March 29, 1942 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt. His confirmation verse was Genesis 17:1, "I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect". Joe served in the United States Army from December 16, 1953 until he received his Honorable Discharge on December 15, 1955 having obtained the rank of Specialist 3. He was united in marriage to Elvira "Vera" Weihe on May 20, 1978 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Paul Hartfield. Joe had been employed as a carpenter and was the custodian and bus driver for St. Paul Lutheran Church and School for many years. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the church's picnic committee. He was also a member of the South Lee County Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed farming and raising his animals. He could usually be found with a bowl of ice cream in his hand.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore & Clara Groeschel; his wife, Vera Groeschel; his sister, Leona Wolff; his brother, Leonard Groeschel; his sisters-in-law, Velma Groeschel and Wren Groeschel and his brothers-in-law, Ervin Lorenz, Alfred Lorenz and Raymond Wolff.

He is survived by his two children, Cyndi Watson of Giddings and Wesley Clopton of Serbin; his two grandchildren, Jordan Watson of Huntsville and Stone Clopton of Serbin; his three sisters, Adelia Lorenz of Serbin, Nadine Christiansen & her husband, Bill of Kingsville and Gertrude Lorenz of Giddings; his sisters-in-law, Bernice Wolff of Houston and Elaine Robbins & her husband, Lester of Pflugerville as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Stone Clopton, Milton Albrecht, Robert Hinze, Jerrell Wolff, John Siegmund and Jonathan Mann. Honorary pallbearer will be Tom Groeschel.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Restoration Fund, 1572 County Road 211, Giddings, Texas 78942 or to the charity of one's choice.
