Biography

The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Son of Edward Whalley and first wife Judith Duffell or Duffield. His date of birth is estimated from his parent's marriage date of 7 February 1626.

He had a fulsome recommendation from his father's cousin Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell in 1658, shortly before Cromwell's death, from which we know Richard spoke Latin, French and Italian.

Richard married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Chapell of Armagh.

He had a grant of 3000 acres of land in Kilkenny and Armagh, and his son Richard also inherited extensive leaseholds from his uncle Richard Chapell.

Agree with Sheila: Whaley-1897 and Whaley-1616 are father and son. Richard Chappell Whaley is the grandson, not son, of Elizabeth Chappell. I've connected Richard junior to his mother to make this clearer.

Whaley-1897 and Whaley-1616 do not represent the same person because: Whaley-1616 appears to be father of Whaley-1897

Whaley-1897 and Whaley-1616 appear to represent the same person because: Richard Chapell Whaley is the son of Elizabeth Chapell who married Richard Whaley. See notes in Whaley-1616 to read about lands Richard Whaley owned in Ireland which came to him through his wife's Chapell family for whom they named their son.
