Transcribed Will of Aaron Putnam[1]

I, Aaron Putnam of Pomfret in the State of Connecticut, believe it is the duty of all persons who can consistently to settle their earthly estates by a written and authenticated Will & Testament - yet such the changes which have come over me that I am not able to fix with Approbation on any former written Will or Testament of mine. At the same time I want to herein also thankfully acknowledge the goodness of God to me in granting me such a portion of his earthly bounty as He has been pleased to afford me and now granting me such competency of reason and soundness of mind as to enable me to perform this duty in regard to my earthly Estate and have all that hope He is graciously pleased to afford me of a future resurrection to eternal Life through Jesus Christ mine only Savior & mine only Hope. I must & do leave my Estate to be settled after the following manner hoping thereby that Justice will be done to my beloved Wife Elizabeth & my children who have been always kind & respectful to me.

First: after my just debts & funeral charges are paid, I give devise & bequeath to my well beloved wife Elizabeth her dower as thirds in my real Estate and one third of my personal Estate forever.

Item: I give & bequeath to all my children & the representative of the deceased or may hereafter decease my Library of Books to be equally divided between them or to be sold by my Executors & the Monies to be equally divided between them. And I give nothing more to the heirs of my daughter Betsey deceased; to my Daughters Polly Allen, Rebecca Morse, Debby Campbell & Sally Storrs. I conceive I have given each their share in my Estate & shall give nothing more than their equal share in my Library as above.

Item: I give devise & bequeath to my three children Susan Putnam, Hannah, Ruth & to their heirs & assigns forever all the remainder & residue of my estate of what name or nature forever to be equally divided between them.

Lastly I do constitute & appoint my beloved Wife Elizabeth & my son Aaron joint Executors of this my last Will.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand & Seal this 10th day of October AD 1812.

Signed Sealed pronounced & declared
By the testator to be his last Will
