Biography

Hector Varney was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Birth Hector was born in 1886, the son of John Varney and Frances Park. [1]

Improvised Post Card Port Melbourne Standard (Vic.) 2 Oct 1915 Apparently, in the exact location of Private Hector Varney, at Anzac Cove, on July 24th, there was no stationery, for a note from him to Constable McClure of Port Melbourne is written on a post card improvised from a piece of a cardboard box. Private Varney states:- "Still in the land of the living. Had rather a bad time for a start, but got a long way the best of the deal. . . Things are a bit quiet at present, but I suppose there will be another bit of a go before long." Private Varney's people live at Foster, South Gippsland.

Letter from Lemnos South Gippsland Shire Echo (Vic.) 7 Jan 1916 ...We are out of the firing line now for about a month's spell, and it is grand to be away from the noise of the whistling bullets. It was starting to get trying on our nerves... Read full letter.

Another letter South Gippsland Shire Echo (Vic.) 5 May 1916 A communication from Pte. Hec. Varney received by a friend in Foster states -that he is well, and that they have had a group photo taken of about 15 local lads in -Egypt. Hec. says that things are very quiet over there at present.
