Biography

European Aristocracy
Cardinal Thomas Weld was a member of the aristocracy in England.
This profile is part of the East Lulworth, Dorset One Place Study.

Thomas was born on 22 January 1773. He was the eldest son of Thomas Weld and May Weld nee Stanley-Massey.

On 14 June 1796 Thomas married Lucy-Bridget Clifford, fourth daughter of Hon. Thomas Clifford.

Thomas and Lucy had one child, daughter Mary Lucy Weld, born 31 January 1799.

Thomas was the seventh member of the Weld Family to own the Lulworth Estate. Thomas inherited it on the death of his father in 1810. The Lulworth Estate is still owned by the Weld Family - see successive owners at The Welds of Lulworth.

Thomas did not return to Lulworth Castle after his father died in 1810 but shut it for several years. From 1817 Thomas let Lulworth Castle to a succession of illustrious tenants including Sir Robert Peel and the Duke of Gloucester. In 1827 Thomas made over the Lulworth Estate to his brother Joseph Weld (1777-1863).

Thomas had started studying for the priesthood shortly after his wife Lucy's death on 1 June 1815. He was ordained Priest in 1821 and was consecrated as Bishop of Lower Canada in 1826. He was created Cardinal-Priest of San Marcello by [[Castiglioni-1|Pope Pius VIII] in 1830.

On 15 May 1831 his daughter Mary died at Palo, Italy and she was buried at Rome on 18 May 1831.

Thomas died aged 64 at Rome on 10 April 1837. He was buried at Santa Maria in Aquiro, Rome. In a letter from Rome, dated 15 April 1837, it was stated "Yesterday, the Pope was present at a requiem, celebrated in honour of Cardinal Weld. The Sovereign Pontiff wished thus to express the great esteem he felt for that dignitary. Never was mourning more general here."

Thomam Weld filium Thomae Weld et Mariae baptizatus 22 Jan 1773
Note by Martin C. Styan: familysearch is not sufficiently specific about this source, but it quotes the names in their Latin forms. The use of the Latin forms indicates that the register is Catholic, but this is not stated directly. The words “filium”, “et” and “baptizatus” have been used to be consistent with the Latin name forms.
