John Baptiste Calkin was born in London on 16 March 1827.[1][2] He was the son of James Calkin[1][2] and Victoire.[2] He was baptised at Old Church, St Pancras, London on 11 April 1827.[2]
His father was an organist and music teacher, and John studied under him.[1] In 1846, when he was 19, he was appointed organist of St Columba's College, Rathfarnham, close to Dublin, Ireland, holding this post for some 7 years.[1] From 1853 he held the following positions:
In 1883 he became a professor at the Guildhall School of Music, London, and after that focused largely on composition and teaching. He was also a Council Member of Trinity College of Music, London.[1]
John composed for a wide range of instruments but is best known for organ music and for vocal music for church use, including settings for Morning and Evening Prayer. He also adapted music for string players.[1] One of his more popular hymn settings was of Fling out the Banner, which appeared in a number of hymnbooks.[1]

In 1857 John married Mary Eurgain Edwards: the marriage was registered in the Islington district of London in the 3rd quarter of 1857.[11]
He passed away in 1905 at Crouch End, London, and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.[1] His death was registered in the Islington district of London in the 2nd quarter of 1905.[12]
