Biography

From Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania:

John (2) Range, was a son of John (1) Range, a soldier of the War of the Revolution, holding the rank of lieutenant. He received a land grant of 400 acres for his services, and on this land the family later resided.
1744: Lt. John Range was born Jan. 27, 1744, in Raritan, Somerset County, N.J., where he grew up. John's parents were Noah and Elizabeth (Coons) Range.
1765: He relocated at Mount Pleasant, York County.
1754–1763: He fought in the French and Indian War,1754–1763, with Lord Amherst’s Division of Colonial Troops.They marched from Philadelphia, through the northern wilderness, to Quebec, Canada.
1767: Married Madeline Shollas, in 1767. Madeline was born in 1750, in Mount Pleasant Township, York County. Her parents were Theobalt and Magdalena Shollas. Her father built a grist mill in 1747, and John worked for him.
1767: The plantation was patented to Theobalt Shollas on Jan. 22, 1767.
1778: On April 5, 1778, John Range was commissioned as First Lieutenant of the Fifth Company of the Fourth Battalion of York County. He fought in several skirmishes until the end of the Revolutionary War.
1784: Lands were purchased by the commonwealth in western Pennsylvania.
1785: John Range was warranted a 258 acre parcel of land along the Allegheny River known as Saqualinget, through the Northumberland Lottery on May 17, 1785. The warrant was taken out in the name of his oldest son, Shollas Range.
1788: Theobalt Shollas, wrote his will on Sept. 5, 1788. Leaving his plantation and grist mill to, Madeline (Shollas) Range. She and John took ownership that December, inheriting 190 acres and 83 perches, and several buildings; a stone house 34 by 30 feet; log barn 38 by 24 feet; grist mill 24 by 24 feet; grist mill 48 by 27 feet, and a sawmill and a hemp mill.
1800: After Adams County was formed Jan. 22, 1800 from York County, the Range Plantation located along the Little Conewago Creek near New Oxford, was now in Adams County.
1805: Dec. 13, 1805, John and Madeline sold the plantation and grist mill to Frederick Myers Sr.
1807: John Range Jr. relocated to Richland Township, Venango County.
1808: Lt. John Range traveled to western Pennsylvania. Shollas, deeded the 258 acres along the Allegheny River to his father, which had been received as a warrant in 1785. After checking out his property at Saqualinget, he returned to Adams County.
1810: A land patent for 181 acres and 159 perches in Straban Township, Adams County, was issued to John Range.
1816: John and Madeline relocated to their property at Saqualinget, along the Allegheny River. James stayed on the farm and John Jr. moved his family from Richland Township, Venango County.

1816: On May 10, 1816, Lt. John Range deeded 115 acres to John Range Jr.
1826: On Jan. 23, 1826, John and Madeline (Shollas) Range sell their farm in Straban Township, Adams County, to Christian Benner. With the agreement of James keeping possession until April 1, 1826. At that time James moved to Tionesta to live with his parents.
1828: Lt. John Range wrote his will on March 7, 1827, and died at his home on May 4, 1827. Lt. John Range was buried near his home property, along the Allegheny River.
1830: Two years after the death of Lt. John Range, his widow Madeline (Shollas) Range died on Aug. 5, 1830. Madeline was buried next to her husband.
1887: With the consent of relatives the remains of Lt. John Range and his wife were relocated to the Riverside Cemetery.

According to Hale, a historian and former mayor of Tionesta, John Range was born Jan. 27, 1744, in Raritan, Somerset County, N.J. His parents were Noah and Elizabeth (Coons) Range. He grew up in Somerset County. Hale provided the information on Lt. John Range. By Mary Hill Tuesday, May 17, 2016[3]

Last Will and Testament of John Range

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Range, of the Township of Allegheny, County of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, being old and infirm, though sound of mind, thanks be to God for his mercies, calling to mind the mortality of the body, and immortality of the soul, do hereby make null and void and of no effect all wills made previous to the date hereof, and do hereby make and establish this my last will and testament in manner following, to-wit: My soul I commit to Almighty God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in manner like christian burial. In the first place I give, devise and bequeath, after the payment of my just debts, to my loving and affectionate wife, Matelane Range, my bed and bed clothes and all other articles which is in them, also two hundred dollars in money, also the book called the Confession of Faith, also my large Bible, and to have a decent maintenance out of my estate. The remaining part of my personal estate to be divided in manner following, viz: My daughter Elizabeth, that was intermarried with Jacob Shriber, to get one hundred dollars less than an equal share of my personal estate, because she has received one hundred dollars. I give, devise and bequeath to my son, John Range, one dollar and no other part of my estate. I give, devise and bequeath to my son, Sholas Range, one dollar and no other part of my estate. I give, devise and allow my daughter Mary, that was intermarried with William Gilbreath, to get one hundred pounds less than an equal share of my personal estate, because she has received one hundred pounds. My daughter Susan, who was intermarried with John Gallegar, to get an equal share of my personal estate. My daughter Ann, who was intermarried with John Begart, to get an equal share of my personal estate. I give, devise and bequeath my real estate to my son, James Range and his heirs and assigns forever, to-wit, the tract of land on which he now resides, also an equal share of my personal estate, and my gin and the implements thereunto belonging.

I do constitute and appoint James Allender, Esq., and my son James Range, my Executors.
Done this seventh day of March in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-seven.
