Since the current profile manager is a distant niece on the Prendergast side of Neil O'Hanley's line, please make contact if an O'Hanley descendant would take ownership of these O'Hanley profiles.
John O'Hanley (sometimes spelled O'Hanly), born about 1833-34 in Scotland, emigrated to Canada in 1848 [1] and settled in Williams Township, Middlesex County. [2]
Appears in the 1871 Canada Census, indexed as Ohenly, (age given as 35) with wife Mary (age 22) and three daughters: Mary (3), Ann (2), and Hannah (10 months) born the previous June. [3]
In 1881, John was a farmer in Williams East township, listed still as Ohenly. John's family, at this point consisted of: Mary (14), Ann (12), Hannah (10), John (6), Neil (4), and Ronald (2). [4] [5]
Parental relationship to Neil Joseph O'Hanle -- in spite of varied surname spellings -- is based on the marriage record for Neil and Anne Prendergast. [6]
In 1911, the last census before John died, he was still found in East Williams, Middlesex North. His age was given as 79 and birth as Nov. 1831, which of course does not agree with the 1901 census, the only one that gives month and day of birth. So which is his correct birth year? (His entry is the last one on the page, in line 50 and faint to read.) [7]
He died in 1917, at age 84 (according to the gravestone), and was buried at the Bornish St. Columba Roman Catholic Cemetery, out in the country, located on Center Road, north of Hwy 402 and south of Parkhill, Ontario. The 1833 birth year would make John 84 years of age by June when he died. (If he was indeed born in 1831, as someone told the 1911 enumerator, then his son or daughter didn't know exactly how old he was.) [8]
There is a John Ohenly in West Williams township in1861, but he is listed as widowed, age 48, which does not fit this profile. The corresponding agricultural census does not give age. [9] [10]
