Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Susan (White) Freeman is a part of US Black heritage.

Susan was born in 1878. She passed away in 1916.

SUSAN L. FREEMAN

Susan L. Freeman, aged 37 years, wife of William J. Freeman, died yesterday at the family residence, 1437 Stratford avenue, Stratford, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Freeman was widely known in Stratford and her host of friends will learn with deep regret of her demise. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters and two sons. Mr. Freeman is employed at the F. C. Beach home, Elm street.[1]

SUSAN L. FREEMAN

The funeral of Susan L., wife of William Freeman, was held from the late residence, 1437 Stratford avenue, Stratford, yesterday afternoon at 230 o'clock. Rev. Mack Hawkins, pastor of the First Baptist church, conducted the service. Many sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance. Burial was in Union cemetery, Stratford.[2]

Research Notes

There was a family of black Whites living in Stratford, CT. Siblings Candace AKA Kansas (b. ~1831)[3][4][5][6], Boston (b. ~1836)[7][8], Fanny (b. ~1851)[9][10], and Charles (b. ~1845) received distribution from their sister Mary E White (1841-1861)[11][12] following her death in Stratford.[13][14] Charles seems to have married one Densy Bellamy and had children Mary L (is this Susan?), Ida M, and Charles.[15]

Note that the 1880 Stratford census has Charles White, Boston White, and Fannie White as neighbors, as well as an older couple, Abel and Elizabeth White, possibly parents. Additionally, a 65 year old George Freeman[16][17][18], possibly related to Susan's husband William Freeman. Almira, George, and Orlina Martinbur appear nearby, who possibly appear related to this family in personal documents. Charles Wells, temporary guardian of daughter Agnes Almira White also appears on the same page. Similar neighbors appear in 1870 as well.

Almira Martinbur (abt.1818-1902) left property to Susan in her will, where Almira Freeman is described as her grand-niece. Many other family members are also listed, namely brother George Martinbur (abt.1830-1909), Henry Benjamin White (1897-1956), son of Frances V (Martinbur) White (abt.1861-1955), aunt Marcia Dickinson, and niece Josephine Eaton.[19][20][21][22][23][24]

Top theory is that Susan an the out-of-wedlock daughter of Frances V (Martinbur) White (abt.1861-1955) (who would have been about 17 years old at the time), and later took the surname of Frances's husband Lyman H White (1863-abt.1927) prior to her marriage.
