Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Martha (Healy) Cashman is a part of US Black heritage.

Martha was born in Georgia in 1840. She was the daughter of Michael Healy and Eliza Clark. Her father was an immigrant from Ireland who became a large plantation owner. Her mother was an enslaved woman who had become the common-law wife of the slave owner.

Martha M. Heal(e)y of Newton, Massachusetts, married Jeremiah Cashman (Cushman on one record) of Boston, Massachusetts, on July 25, 1865 at St. Mary (Roman Catholic), Waltham, Massachusetts. They were married in the presence of Rev. Jas. A. Healy and Rev. S. Healy (both brothers of the bride) and others.[1][2][3] Jeremiah was 32 years old, a son of Timothy and Mary Cashman, and worked as a salesman. His birthplace was not recorded. Martha was 27 and born in Georgia, a daughter of Michael and Eliza Healy.[2][3] Another version of the record gives the place of marriage as Boston, Massachusetts.[4]

Jeremiah Cashman (Cushman on one record) of Boston, Massachusetts, married Martha M. Heal(e)y of Newton, Massachusetts, on July 25, 1865 The 1870 U.S. Census recorded Jere Cashman, age 36, described as "works in trunk store," and Martha Cashman, age 32, in Boston, Massachusetts, Ward 14, with one-year-old Mary A. Cashman, their daughter, and 50-year-old domestic Mary Buckley. The record says that Jere was born in Vermont and Martha in Georgia. Martha had $4500 of real estate and $500 personal estate.[5]

In 1900 the U.S. Census recorded Jeremiah Cashman, age 62, a salesman, in Newton, Massachusetts, with wife Martha, 60, and daughters Mary S. Cashman, 25, and Elizabeth Cashman, 21. Martha had had eight children, of whom only four were living.[6]

The 1920 U.S. Census recorded Martha Cashman, age 80, a widow, sharing a home at 16 Broadway in Watertown, Massachusetts, with her daughters Mary A. Gallagher, age 42 and also a widow; and May S. Cashman, 38 and single. [7]

She died in Watertown on 18 May 1920 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts, per death record.[8] Boston Catholic Cemetery Association records indicate that she was buried on 19 May 1920 in Mt. Cavalry Cemetery, Hawthorn Path Section, Lot 10, Grave 1.[9]
