Hanford Lockwood, son of Lewis and Sally (Lockwood) Lockwood, born in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, 10 November 1810; died in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, 20 Aug 1887, age 76; buried in Scofieldtown & Lockwood #4 Cemetery, Stamford; member of the Methodist Episcopal Church; shoe maker, herbalist, doctor; married in Stamford, Fairfield County, 23 December 1847, Josephine Blake. [See below for sources.]
There are some facts that indicate Hanford and his wife Josephine might have become estranged during their latter years. In the 1860 Federal Census they are both living together with their daughter Harriet. The 1870 census has Josephine living with her daughter and son-in-law. Hanford is not found in this census. The 1880 census has Hanford living with his sister. Josephine is not found in this census. The city directories for this time have Hanford living in Roxbury or North Stamford. Josephine is not found in the directories until the year of her husband's death and she is on Franklin Street which is in the city center. However, Josephine is mentioned in the Will of her husband Hanford in 1887.
The 1867 map of Stamford depicts the various neighborhoods or areas in Stamford and their position within the town. While no Hanford Lockwood or Dr. Lockwood has been found on the map, there was a Mr. Lockwood.
Hanford had a strong reputation as a herbalist or doctor within the family. Although he died in 1887, stories were still being told about his abilities for almost a hundred years. I remember my father, Hanford's 2d great-grandson Albert A. Haviland, telling me of his doctoring abilities with his salves. Albert said Hanford's nickname was Hanp or Hemp.
