James L. was born at or just after his father, James, died or went missing in the civil war. His brother, Darius (one year older), was in the household of Levi Forbes in 1870. James and Darius' mother was Matilda Forbes. James was in the household of Horace Board a couple dwellings away from some more Forbes. James grew up to have 8 children.
