He was the child^[1] of Charles Hamilton and Louisa Whittlesey, the brother^[1] of Civil War soldiers Frank, Henry and Paul Hamilton of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and the husband^[4] of Alice Martin.
