"FATAL ACCIDENT AT GREENWICH GAS WORKS, Mr Carttar held and inquest on Monday evening at the Admiral Hardy, Greenwich on the body of Christian Randoph Westerland, aged 38, of 57, Bridge Street, Greenwich. Mr Redgrave, Inspector of Factories was present to watch the caseElizabeth Westerland, the widow, said the deceased was a labourer at the South Metropolitan Gas Works in Thames Street, Greenwich. She heard on Wednesday morning week that her husband had met with an accident, and went to the hospital, where she saw her husband. He told her that he was putting a strap on some machinery, when his coat caught in a bolt and he was drawn into the machinery. He said there was not enough space to turn; but he did not blame anyone. Deceased had been employed at the gas works for seven or eight years. Frank Male, labourer at the gas works, of 118, Foxberry Road, Brockley, said the deceased, on Wednesday week, about 7 o'clock, offered, and was allowed, to put the belt on the machinery to drive the coke crusher. The engine was then in motion. As he was putting the belt on the wheel, his right hand sleeve caught in it, and he was dragged round the shaft. Witness ran to stop the engine. As he went in David Anthony shut the gas off, and the engine was stopped as speedily as possible. The deceased was taken round with the wheel, and got jammed against the wall. He was got out and taken to the Seamen's Hospital at once. It was not the deceased's duty to put on the belt; and he thought it was the duty of Anthony or a man called "Jack" to do it. Thomas Kilby, fitter, employed at the works, partially corroborated, and said he would not put the belt on while the engine was running. Dr Hall, house surgeon at the Seamen's Hospital, said the deceased was admitted at 7.10 on March 31st with a fractured spine and fracture of the right arm. He was in a state of extreme collapse, and was partially paralysed. He recovered from the shock; but the case was almost hopeless from the commencement, and he succumbed on Saturday Morning. The cause of death was congestion of the lungs, induced by the fracture of the spine. His clothing was torn to tatters. David Anthony, turner and millwright, of 26, Haddo Street, Greenwich, said that he and two others were employed in the shop, and they all looked after the engine. A man named Newton had charge of putting the belts on, and when the mishap occurred, he had gone up to one of the engine-houses. The deceased and Male came and said they were going to crush coke. Witness said " Newton will be here directly to put the belt on". Deceased said, "I'll put it on," and he took the belt. Witness afterwards heard a scream, and shut off the gas and stopped the machinery. An order had recently been made that the belt must not be put on while the machinery was in motion, and a new gear had been provided for safety. The men were in a hurry to put on the belt. There was no one specially in charge of the engine. Mr. Braidwood had told witness to see that no belts were put on while the machinery was in motion.John Newton, fitter, of 1, Little Thames Street, Greenwich, said there were three men in the shop, and the one left had charge of the whole. The coke men put the belt on when he was not there. If he had been there, he should have put it on. He usually put it on when the shaft was running and thought it safe to do so. Anyone who was used to the work could do it with safety. He never slipped on the ladder; but if a man did slip it might be fatal. The engine could easily be stopped to allow of the belt being put on. An ordinary ladder was kept in the shop, which could be used instead of the one used that day. Anthony was in charge on that morning. James Francis Braidwood, engineer, and manger of the Greenwich Gas Works, said the deceased was a sober man. Some time ago it struck witness that there was danger in putting the belts on, and he had a fast and loose bolt made for the main shaft. If it were needed there need be no danger at all. He would not allow any belt to be put on while the main shaft was being driven. It was a common practice for men to put the belts on while the machinery was in motion, There must always be a risk. Mr Redgrave said he had been to the premises, and thought the evidence of the last witness fairly represented the facts. It was a dangerous practice to put the belts on machinery while it was moving. Witness saw a bolt in which he thought the deceased might have caught his coat. There was no occasion for a ladder. With reference to the machinery, he thought the manager had taken such precautions as could be expected. The jury, after a deliberation in private, returned a verdict "That the deceased died from congestion of the lungs, from fracture of the spine and other injuries, accidentally sustained whilst attempting to place a belt on machinery in motion." The jury expressed a hope that Mr. Braidwood would place a notice outside the building, prohibiting any but those in charge interfering with the machinery."
