John Hayes was involved in events associated with the Eureka Rebellion at Ballarat.

John was born about 1843 at Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of Timothy Hayes and Anastasia Butler.^[1] who were two of the main characters in the Story of Eureka Stockade.

The family, Dad, Mum & 5 children. later immigrated to Melbourne, Australia arriving 1852 on the ship 'Mobile'. ^[2]

John would have been a witness to the Eureka Stockade events, although then aged 11 years.

In 1868 John married Agnes Agatha Madden.^[3]. At the time of marriage he could have been a postmaster, he was working at the Electric Telegraph Station, Mortlake.

"HAYES—MADDEN.—On the 16th inst., at Tower-hill, Belfast, by the Rev. James Parle, John Hayes, Electric Telegraph Station, Mortlake, to Agnes Agatha, second daughter of the late Stephen Macnamara Madden, formerly of Loughrea, Ireland." ^[4] They had four children:

• Inez May Hayes, born 1869, died 1884;^[5]
• John Madden Butler Hayes, born 1708, died 1874;^[6]
• Edith Anastasia Hayes, born 1871, died 1908;^[7]
• Herbert Edmund Hayes, born 1873^[8], died 1873.

1875 John passed away after a long and lingering illness, aged 32.^[9]. ^[1]
