Biography

Allen Drinkwater
is the 4th generation of this surname found in early America, a descendant of Thomas Drinkwater.

Allen – the 1st son and 4th of 11 siblings – was born in 1768 to Joseph Drinkwater and Mary Leach, in the Province of Maine.[1][2]

He married Hannah Gray in 1826. They had 11 children - four sons and seven daughters. All four sons took to the sea. The 2nd son, Watson—mate of brig Alfred—died at Point Petre, Guadalupe, at age 27.

THIS INFORMATION WAS TAKEN FROM THE WORK OF JOHN S. FERNALDS [1901] NAMED THE DRINKWATER FAMILY.

In the year 1800 the Governments of the United States and France made a treaty, one clause of which was that France should pay to the United States the value of all property of the United States or its citizens which had been destroyed or taken by French privateers prior to that date. The claims were all paid into the United States Treasury soon after, but it was not until 80 years later that our government paid the amounts due to our own citizens. These were known as the French Spoliation claims. One of these claims, presented in 1819 by Jane Gardiner, administratrix, was on account of the Brig Ca Ira, taken by a French privateer in 1797. The vessel was owned by Joseph Drinkwater, and commanded by Captain Allen Drinkwater, both of North Yarmouth. The full amount allowed was $6,344, of which $3,434 was to Joseph Drinkwater; $2,210 to Elisha Gardiner, another owner, and the remainder in lots of $100 or $200 to the underwriters and others of Portland.

Allen quit the sea in later life and, like other old Drinkwater mariners, took up farming. In 1850, Allen, 81, wife Mary, 67, daughter Hannah, 52, and son, Watson Gray Drinkwater, 20, lived in Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine.[3]
