He married Jannie Lenore Fleming probably in South Carolina, but no marriage record has been found to date, however they appear as husband and wife with their children in census records beginning with the 1900 U.S. census.[4][5][6][7]
By 1900 Porter was living with his wife and four of their children in Sevier County, Arkansas where they remained until after 1908 when they moved to Garvin County, Oklahoma.[8][9][10][11] Porter and Jannie had eleven known children, including several who died as infants. Those whose names are known were:

On 28 July 1936 Porter died in Garvin County, OK and was buried at Katie Cemetery.[12][13]
