Biography

Clarence was born in Scott's Hill, Tennessee, on 29 March 1907.^[1] His parents were James M. Austin and Cyntha A.(Clenney) Austin.^[2] About 1920 the family moved to North Carolina, eventually settling in Greensboro. He married Elsie (or Elzie) May Campbell on 23 July 1927.^[3] The couple had two children, Mitchell and Bobby. The family remained in Greensboro, where Clarence and Elsie both worked in clothing factories, particularly the Blue Bell overalls plant,^[4][5][6] until at least 1942.^[1] At some point, however, they moved to the mid-Atlantic area, living in Baltimore; Dover, Delaware; and Havre de Grace, Maryland. Clarence died in Havre de Grace on 1 January 1993.^[7]
