Biography

Birth and Parents

Emma (Bates) Wyman was born in Massachusetts.

Emma, the daughter of Edmund Bates (1818-1878) and Elizabeth Gould (1818-) was born on 31 October 1849 at Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. ^[1]

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth married Charles Hadley Wyman, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Frances (Hadley) Wyman on 16 March 1869 at Boston, Massachusetts.^[2] Emma and Charles had four children born at St. Louis:

1. Bates L. Wyman (b. 1870; d. 1946), m. Lillie Langdon (1868-1956)
2. Frank Wyman (b. 1873), m. 5 Mar 1904 at Brookline, MA, Helen MacGregor Pierce (1880-1961)^[3]
3. Louise Kennedy Wyman (b. 1874; d. 1960), m. 1899 at Missouri, Allan Pendleton Whittemore (1873-1953)
4. Elizabeth H. Wyman (b. Sep 1881; d. bef. 1908, St Louis, MO).

Census Records for 1870, 1880 and 1900

In 1870, Emma, 21 years of age and born at Massachusetts kept house while husband Charles was 24 years of age and working as a Clerk in Customs House were residing at St. Louis, Missouri. Living with them was a domestic servant, Virginia Tanner (25 years, born at Missouri).^[4]

In 1880, Emma, 34 years of age and husband Charles, 34 years of age, employed as a Customs House Broker at St. Louis were living at St. Louis, Missouri with children Bates (10 years), Frank (9 years), Louise K. (6 years), half brother Arthur Wyman, (23 years, born at Missouri, occupation Grocery Store Clerk), mother-in-law Mary E. Bates (61 years, born at New Hampshire) and A. Herchenroeder, 21 years of age, a woman servant from Germany.^[5]

The 1900 census indicates Emma, 52 years of age and Charles, 55 years of age and still employed as a U.S. Customs House Broker had been married for 31 years and had six children, four of whom survived adulthood. Their youngest child, Elizabeth H., 19 years of age, was living with them along with servant Ella Emerson (50 years, born at Missouri).^[6]

Death and Burial

Emma E. (Bates) Wyman died on 29 April 1926 in her 77th year at Concord, Massachusetts and is buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery at St. Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.^[7]
