There is also a Harpersfield, Ohio, which the 1830 census records as his birthplace; I am giving more credence to the death record, which lists New York as the state of birth.

Purportedly the son of James Montgomery [Wikitree profile Montgomery-3676] (1765 Blandford MA -1834 Ashtabula OH) and Mary Baldwin (1774 Litchfield CT -1815 Ashtabula) [3]
