Biography

Cornellum, aka Kernellum or Kenelm, Morton was born on March 18, 1767 in Meduncook (now Friendship) in Lincoln (now Knox) County, Province of Maine, Massachusetts Bay. Cornellum was the son of Ebenezer and Rachel (Bradford) Morton.

Cornellum served in the military as a Private for 2 mos. and 16 days in Capt. Philip M. Ullmer's Co., Col. Samuel McCobb's regiment, his service being from July 8 to September 24, 1779 on the Penobscot Expedition.

Cornellum married Miriam Graffam, aka Grafton, about 1787. Where Cornellum and Miriam lived and where they began their family are pending additional research. For certain, however, he and Miriam were living in Lubec, Washington County, Maine in 1820 and in Eastport, Washington County in 1830. Daughter Mary G. reportedly was born in Thomaston, hence, it may be for a time, Cornellum and Miriam, and family resided in Thomaston. Otherwise, where Cornellum and his family were in 1790 and in 1800 remain uncertain.

In Friendship's 1810 Fed. Census, the household of a Kenelm Morton was enumerated, and may have been a variant name utilized in the 1810 Census for Cornellum, subject of this profile. Kenelum's household is as follows: 1 male under 10 (Unknown-1), 1 male 10-15 (Andrew C.), 1 male 26-44 (self), 1 female under 10 (Mary G.), and 1 female 26-44 (Miriam). These enumerations do match Cornellum's family configuration and are commensurate with Cornellum's household members' ages enumerated in 1820.

In Lubec's 1820 Fed. Census, the household of Cornellum included 2 males 16-25 (Andrew, Unknown-1); 1 male over 45 (self); 1 female 16-25 (Mary G.); and 1 female over 45 (assumed to be wife Miriam). Cornellum and family are living adjacent to brother Zenas Amasa Morton and family.

By 1830, Cornellum removed from Lubec to Eastport. His household that year included four members, himself (60-69); one male (20-29); one female (20-29, Mary G.); and one female (60-69, wife Miriam).

Cornellum passed away in Friendship about November 24, 1837, about 1 year after his son Andrew passed away.
