Biography
Sarah was born in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut on 26 November 1779 the daughter of Hezikiah and Sarah (Gale) Olmsted. Records exist in both her given name[1] and nickname "Sally"[2] Records also exist with the family name spelled with the "a"; those are in error.
She married Sylvanus Ferris and they had nine children:
- Sylvanus Western, b. 1799, d. 1887
- Nathan Olmsted, b. 1801, d. 1850
- Sarah Maria, b. 1803, d. infant
- Timothy Harvey, b. 1805, d. 1891
- William Mead, b. 1809, d. 1892
- Henry, b. 1809, b. 1892
- Laura, b. 1811, d. 1831
- Harriet Newell, b. 1816, d. 1851
- George Washington Gale, b. 1818, d. 1895
Ferris and Gale families were both industrialists and prominent in the development of Galesburg, Illinois and some descendants still live in Knox County.
Mrs. Ferris was described as a model woman for pioneer life.[3]
Sally passed away in 1845 and is buried in the family plot in the Hope Cemetery, Knox County, Illinois.[4]
