Abel was born in 1739. He passed away in 1823.

http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Abel was the son of Abel Phelps and Mary Pennock. He was born in Simsbury, CT 5 Jul 1739. He married Lucy Beardsley 20 Nov 1770 (or 1765?). She died in South Hero, Grand Isle, VT. He was a farmer, first settling in Goshen, CT, then removing to Norfolk, where he resided a few years. About 1779 he, with his family removed to Vermont, stopping for one season on the banks of the River Onio near what is now known as Winooski. Early the following year, he crossed Lake Champlain, and settled on the south end of Grand Isle, then an unbroken wilderness, selected a site and put up a log house. This is now known as South Hero. A short time after settling here, he was joined by his brothers Elisha and Joseph. He had five children born in Goshen, CT, and Norfolk.

He was Lieut. of 3rd Company of Trained Band, and 17th Regt. the State Ct. He also served in the Militia for the State of Vermont. He and his son Alexander were taken prisoners by the Indians and Tories, taken to Canada, kept prisoners in a block-house for three weeks, when they escaped and returned home.

Children were Alexander, and Benajah born in Goshen, CT, and Abel, Mary and Lucy born in Norfolk, CT.
