Biography

John Earle was born about 1744. He was the son of Sylvester Earle and Matilda Zabriskie. He passed away about 1833.

DESCENDANTS OF JOHN (D 57).
JOHN EARLE (D 57), second of the name, the eldest surviving son of Sylvester and Matilda Zabriskie Earle, was b. Jan. 10, 1744; bap. Feb. 3, 1745; his name on the record of the Schraalenburgh Ref’d Church appears as ‘Joannes.”
He lived at Hackensack, where he d. Nov. 12, 1831.
He m. 1st, Catherine Hopper, sister of Jacob Hopper of Pollidy, Jan. 2, 1775. She d. in 1776, aged 24, with no record of issue.
John m. 2nd, Jan. 13, 1781, Elizabeth, dau. of Lawrence Ackerman of Pollifly; Elizabeth was b. July 4, 1759, and d. in 1839.
There were nine children:
  • #1 LAWRENCE EARLE (E 155), was b. Oct. 31, 1781; he was evidently named after his grandfather Ackerman; he never married, and was in business with his brother John, in Greenwich St., New York.
  • #2 MAGDALEN EARLE (E 156), was b. Nov. 18, 1783; she m. a Mr. Van Buren, but nothing further is known about her.
  • #3 SOPHLA. EARLE (E 157), was b. May 24, 1786; she remained unmarried, and on May 24, 1886, celebrated her 100th anniversary.
  • #4 EDWARD I. EARLE (E 158) was b. Dec. 5, 1788; in his will, which was made Jan. 28, 1859, he styles himself “Edward I. Earle of the village of Hackensack, late merchant.” He mentions his wife Elizabeth; son John L.; daughters Catherine, “Ursella” and Ann Elizabeth, and deceased daughter Sophia; executors, son John L. and sons-in-law David Terhune and Adonijah S. Quackenbush; the will was admitted to probate Feb. 28, 1872. He m., July 3, 1813, Elizabeth Brinckerhoff. Elizabeth d. March 30, 1876. Her will, dated Jan. 18, 1873, mentions her late husband, Edward I. Earle, her sister-in-law, Sophia, and five children.
The children of this marriage were:
    • #4-1 ANN ELIZABETH EARLE (F 196), who m. Jacob Braisted and had Edward Earle (G 369).
    • #4-2 CATHERINE EARLE (F 197), who m. Rev. Samuel D. Wester- velt, pastor of King Street Ref’d Dutch Church, New York City. In 1853 he became pastor of Presbyterian Church at Yorktown, N. Y. There issued from this marriage Erskine, John Calvin, Elizabeth, Euphemia, who m. Simon T. Zabriskie, and Edward E. Westervelt.
    • #4-3 SOPHIA EARLE (F 198), who m. Adonijah Schuyler Quackenbush of New York. Several children issued from this marriage, and are referred to in grandfather’s will, but names are not given.
    • #4-4 RICHARD BRINCKERHOFF EARLE (F 199), d. at the age of 16.
    • #4-5 JOHN LAWRENCE EARLE (F 200) was a broker in New York City. He m. his cousin, Eliza Earle Berry, and had four children.
      • #4-5-1 EDWARD ISAAC EARLE (G 380) m. Ridgway and had Edna and Bessie, who live in Philadelphia, Pa.
      • #4-5-2 MARY CHRISTINA EARLE (G 381) lives in Hackensack, N. T. She m. Theodore J. Palmer and has Christina Berry, Marie Adel, Robert Johnson and Augustus Embury.
      • #4-5-3 LAURA TAPPAN EARLE (G 382) d. of consumption at the age of 18 years, within a month of her mother, who d. of the same disease.
      • #4-5-4 WM. de PEYSTER BERRY EARLE (G 383) m. Margaret T. Nicholson, without issue.
    • #4-6 URSULA EARLE (F 201) lives on Union St., Hackensack, N. J. m. David Terhune and had two children:
      • #4-6-1 WALTER TERHUNE (G 384), lives in Pittsburgh, Pa.
      • #4-6-2 SARAH B. TERHUNE (G 385) lives on Union Street, Hackensack. m. Charles E. Moore and had Marian Earle and Evelyn Belden.
  • #5 JOHN EARLE, JR. (E 159), was b. June 13, 1790; d. in 1896; was a merchant in New York with his brother Lawrence; Major of City Artillery, 1812-14, on duty in New York harbor; do not have record of this family.

  • #7 JUSTUS EARLE (E 161), youngest son of John Earle and Elizabeth Ackerman, was b. March 24, 1800; he m. 1st, about 1823, Ann Matilda Stagg, to whom five children were born:
    • #7-1 MARY AUGUSTA EARLE (F 204), m. John Jeremiah Sproull.
    • #7-2 JUSTINE EARLE (F 205), m. Alexander Kyle and had Alexander, Jr., who m. Augusta Hamilton Steele, and Collin Reed Kyle.
    • #7-3 ANNA MATILDA EARLE (F 206), m. Lewis F. Randolph and had Mrs. E. Albertson, who lives at 1 W. 97, The Cornell, New York City.
    • #7-4 ELIZABETH EARLE (F 207), who d. at the age of 14 years.
    • #7-5 BENJAMIN STAGG EARLE (F 208), m. Frances Matilda
(#7 Continued) Justus Earle m. 2nd, Mrs. Telfair and had one son.
    • #7-6 JUSTUS EARLE, JR. (F 209), who d. in early childhood.
We have seen a book at Hackensaok inscribed, “Justus Earle, born Aug. 19, 1749. (This book was given to his brother John and presented by him to his son Justus a few weeks before his death).” This Justus was (D 59), who presented the book to (D 57).
  • #8 ELIZA EARLE (E 162), eighth child of John Earle and Elizabeth Ackerman, was b. August 24, 1804; dead in 1844; m. a Van Blarcom and had one child.
    • #8-1 CATHERINE SOPHIA VAN BLARCOM (F 210).
  • #9 CATHERINE EARLE (E163), youngest child of John Earle and Elizabeth Ackerman, was b. Nov. 22, 1807; she remained single; her will dated Township of Lodi, Dec. 10, 1844, mentions sister Sophia (E157); sister Eliza (E162); niece Catherine Sophia Van Blarcom, and nephew Adonijah Schuyler Quackenbush; will probated Feb. 9, 1849.
