Biography

Summary

"James D. McGregor, New Glasgow, entered public life in 1890, and served for four years in the [Nova Scotia provincial] House of Assembly. He was returned again in 1897. In 1900 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the [House of ] Commons [in the Parliament of Canada]. In 1903 he was called to the Senate [of the Parliament of Canada], and in 1910 succeeded another Pictonian, the Hon. D. C. Fraser, in the office of Lieutenant Governor of the Province [of Nova Scotia]. Mr. McGregor is a grandson of the Rev. Dr. McGregor, and senior partner in the firm of R. McGregor & Sons. He has long been prominent in Church and State. His elevation to the Governor's Chair was a well-deserved honor to a worthy citizen."

The description above of public service by James D. MacGregor was written by John Peter MacPhie in his book Pictonians at Home and Abroad, released in 1914 [plus helpful editorial insertions to clarify the dense narrative for non Nova Scotians]. The book is available in the public domain at the Internet Archive. [1] In what was likely a minor oversight, the narrative neglected to include public service during 1879-1880 by James D. MacGregor as Mayor of the city of New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. [2]

Birth

James Drummond McGregor was born on 1 September 1838 in New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, British Colonial America. His parents were Roderick MacGregor and Janet Chisholm. [3] James was named after his paternal grandfather, Rev. James Drummond MacGregor.

Ancestors

Paternal Grandparents

Rev. James Drummond MacGregor (1759-1830), father of Roderick MacGregor, was born in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. He enrolled at University of Glasgow in 1776 and became fluent in Gaelic. After graduating in 1779 he began his theological studies at the Associate Synod Theological Hall at Alloa, a five year program. In 1786 after completing his theological studies he was assigned by the General Associate Synod of Scotland as a missionary to the frontier community at Pictou, Nova Scotia, British Colonial America. [4] In 1796, ten years into his mission at Pictou in Nova Scotia, Rev. MacGregor was 36 years old when he married Ann Mackay in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Ann Mackay (1772-1809), mother of Roderick MacGregor, was born in Scotland and arrived in Pictou, Nova Scotia, British Colonial America in 1773 as an infant with her parents on the ship Hector. Ann Mackay's father was a master blacksmith who worked in the shipyards of Halifax. Ann Mackay was 25 years old in 1796 when she married Rev. James Drummond MacGregor. Tragically, she died in 1809 at the age of 36 during her seventh childbirth.

Maternal Grandparents

Parents

Roderick MacGregor (1802-1871) was born at the glebe (or parson's close) built by his father Dr. MacGregor beside the East River below New Glasgow, a location with no geographic name at that time. From the perspective of geographic place names employed in Nova Scotia vital records, the location became known as Coal Mine Station during the War of 1812, and two decades later in 1830 as Albion Mines, and four decades later in the 1870s the bustling community acquired its current name: Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

Janet Jessie Chisholm (1810-1888), was likely born in Nova Scotia, but her birth or baptism date, the names of her parents, and the community where she was raised currently lack source citations. [5]

Early Years

Marriage of Parents

Jessie Chisholm and Roderick MacGregor were married on 9 December 1831 in Nova Scotia, British Colonial America. [6] Their handwritten marriage bond named the date the marriage was solemnized but did not name the geographical location of the event.

  8. Isabell Ross, female, granddaughter, single, born Jan. 1907, age 4 years, born in Toronto, ethnicity English*, citizen Canadian, religion Presbyterian.

*Notes. James D. McGregor's religion was Presbyterian, not Catholic. Retired is inaccurate; he was living at Government House in Halifax while serving the as the Lieutenant Governor of the province of Nova Scotia. Roberta's surname, illegible on the enumeration page, was Ridley. Her date of birth and age (35 years) are wrong, in part because her age was listed as 49 years in the prior census ten years earlier in 1901. His grandson Donald's correct birth year was 1902, and his ethnicity was listed as "English" but Donald's father was 100% Scottish and his mother was 75% Scottish and 25% English.

Second Marriage to Roberta

  • 1901 census lists wife Roberta, birthdate 5 November 1852, age 49 years, birthplace Ontario
  • 1911 census lists wife Roberta, born Nov. 1876, age 35 years, born in Ontario. Birth year and age are likely errors by the census enumerator because, first the values are out of sync with the same data elements in the 1901 census, and second because the values rather conspicuously duplicate the values of the same two data elements for the resident named on the next line down.
  • FamilySearch contains index entries for Roberta in both 1901 and 1911 census, but neither Roberta is attached to a FamilySearch identity
  • breakthrough - the findagrave record for roberta discloses a candidate birth year and maiden name. to be continued...
