Her first husband, Walter Joseph O'Daniel Sr., was murdered by highwaymen soon after they passed through the Cumberland Gap from Maryland to Kentucky. He went back to a blacksmith shop they had passed on the way to have something made. When his oldest son, Joseph and a slave man went to look for him and found that Joseph, Sr. had been seized by highway men, slain and his money and valuable horse were taken. The family proceeded on to what is now Washington County, Kentucky. This happened before the 1810 Federal Census of Washington County, Kentucky, where she is shown as a widowed head of household.

Matthew Doyle wrote his will on February 1, 1834, and it was probated on May 25, 1835, and recorded in Washington County, Kentucky Will Book #F on page 180. He left all his estate, his farm, and Negro girl, Phillis, to his wife, Mary, during her single life. After her death, this was left to his daughter [by his first wife], Catherine (Doyle) Ginnnott. He appointed Raphael Courier as his executor. He mentions his wife's daughter Hettie's children. The will is witnessed by Nathaniel Carrico and Pius Carrico.
