Biography

Richard Roland Cuny was the fourth son of Richmond Edmond Cuny and Tabitha Wells. He was a physician of some note in his day. He never married. He acted as surgeon for his cousin, Samuel Levi Wells III, in the Sandbar Duel. Before the tragic affair took place, he made a desperate effort for a peaceful settlement but was unsuccessful. When his brother, General Samuel Cholett Cuny, attempted to join the fight which followed the duel, Richard threw his arms around him in an effort to hold him back. After he was thrown aside by his brother, and before he could intervene again, it was too late as his brother lay mortally wounded. Dr. Cuny moved to Catahoula Parish sometime after the duel and died there at Sicily Island. His remains are in one of the graveyards in that vicinity.
