Biography

Anna Maria de Luca, called Antonina Maria in one record of her marriage, is born around 1862-3 in Corleone, based on her reported ages at marriage and emigration. She is the daughter of Francesco de Luca and Angela Milone.

Anna Maria, age 19 (b. 1863), industriosa (manufacturer/trader), marries Filippo Callaci, age 36 (b. 1846), a miller, born in Menfi (in Agrigento province) and resident of Corleone, son of the late Carlo Callaci, and of the late Giuseppa Piazza, who both lived in Menfi; on 24 June 1882 in Corleone. Her own parents are still living in Corleone. The witnesses at the civil announcement of their wedding are Leoluca Nicolosi, 35 (b. 1847), and Giovanni Cutrone, 29 (b. 1853), both shoemakers.[1][2]

Anna Maria and Filippo have four known children: Carlo (c. 1884), Angela (c. 1891), Francesco (1900), and Giovanna (c. 1902).

Francesco is born 21 January 1900 and baptized 23 January 1900 in Corleone. His godparents are Rosario and Anna de Luca, brother and sister.[3]

On 30 December 1913, Anna Maria, now widowed, arrives in New York with three of her children on the Canada. Line 22-26 are from Corleone:

22. Angela Callaci, 22 (b. 1891), married, leaves her FIL Pietro Mione in Corleone, joins her husband Arcangelo Miane at 234 E. 107th St.

23. Maria Miane, 1 (b. 1912), leaves her grandfather as above, joins father as above

24. Anna Maria de Luca, 51 (b. 1862), widow, leaves her brother Gioachino de Luca in Corleone, joins her son Carlo (as below)

25. Francesco Callaci, 13 (b. 1900), leaves his uncle as above. He is joining his brother Carlo at 234 E 107th St

26. Giovanna Callaci, 11 (b. 1902), leaves her uncle as above[4]

Frank lives at 238 E 107th St, New York City, with his mother when he registers for the draft for WWI.[5]

By the late 1920s, Frank is a known member of Tommy Gagliano's crime family, later known as the Lucchese crime family.[6]

In the 1930 federal census of New York City’s 18th Assembly District, taken 4 April, Mary Callace, 65 (b. 1865), a widow, heads a household at 229 E. 107th St. with her son, Frank, 30 (b. 1900), single. They were both born in Italy and emigrated in 1907. Frank is a violinist, teaching at home.

The households to either side are at the same address, and are headed by men named “Mione.” One of them, Angelo Mione, is Mary’s son in law.[7]

Frank is arrested in 1943 for his involvement in narcotics trafficking, and after serving several year in prison and being released on parole, he violates the terms of his parole and is deported to Italy.[6]

Frank returns to the United States illegally and is killed in 1954 in New York.[6]
