Biography

Aubrey DeWolfe (1870-1930)

Aubrey was born on 13 Apr 1870 in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, Canada.[1]

He was remembered as "...a wild colt and one of the boys...," in his childhood days in Windsor, Nova Scotia.[2]

He was married by 1902 to Clara Watrous.[3]

By 1909 he was living in Bridgeport, Connecticut and visited Windsor and area after an absence of 24 years. He was reported to have, "...made a comfortable fortune in the saloon business, 'Meals at all hours.' " However there were those glad to see that, "...it's pleasant to find him now a ... temperance advocate and capable man of business."[4]

He participated in a bird and pet show at Lincoln Hall, in Dec 1910 exhibiting a Maltese terrier.[5]

He opened at a new location his restaurant, at 533 Water St, Bridgeport by October 1911.[6]

By 1918, he and his family were living on Colorado Ave, Bridgeport.[7]

He was still living there in 1917-1920 when two daughter attended the Acadia Ladies Seminary, Wolfville, NS.[8][9]

By November 1921 his restaurant was now located at 74 Cannon Ave. DeWolfe's Restaurant advertisement, 1921. [10]

He was still a restaurant owner in Bridgeport CT, in 1922 with his residence at 422 West Ave. In 1929 he inherited a legacy from his brother Harry's will and was noted in a newspaper article as still a restaurant proprietor.[11]

The 1930 United States census lists him as a 59 yr old, divorced, Canadian born, naturalized Cdn of French origin, claimed to have spoken French in home before coming to the US, immigrated to the US in 1880, listed as a restaurant cook as it is unclear whether he is the owner or an employee, living in Bridgeport, Connecticut.[12]
