Biography

Marie Julie was born on 8 Jan 1842 in Frahier, Canton Champagney, Haute Saone, France, the daughter of Francois Auguste and Marie Therese Lucienne (Despoire) Deloye. [1] [2] Her sister Hortense was living with her husband and year old child in New Orleans in the 1850 census, therefore Hortense would have been married sometime before 1849, thus placing the Deloye family in New Orleans by 1849.

Marie Julie married Barthelemy Antoni (name also given as Antony) at St. Ann's Church in New Orleans on 9 Jul 1860. [3] [4] Together they had the following children: Juliette Mathilde, Marie Antoinette, Bernard Auguste, Marie Victoire Catherine, Jean Andre, Joseph Auguste, Francois Maurice and Julie Marie

Barthelemy died in May of 1881, and on 29 Jun 1882, Marie Julie married Davide Merola in New Orleans.[5] By Davide she had two daughters: Rosa and Lillian C.

By 1888, they were living in Birmingham, AL [6] Sometime before 1900 they had moved to Memphis, Tennessee [7] where Davide operated a restaurant and business with his stepdaughter Julie's husband (Charles Candler Wooten). Davide died in Memphis on 17 Mar 1900 [8] [9]

Either Marie Julie moved immediately back to Birmingham, or she and Davide had been splitting their time between there and Memphis, as she is listed in the 1900 Birmingham City directory as operating a grocery in 1900. [10] Her daughter Julie Marie (Antony) Wooten died on Christmas Day 1901. In the wake of her daughter's death, Marie Julie travelled to Memphis to help care for her five grandchildren, and died (probably of a stroke) on arrival at the railroad station in Memphis on 28 Dec. The cause of death was given as paralysis. [11] Her son-in-law originally planned to bury her with her second husband, Davide, but he was overruled by her children in Louisiana.[12] However, they did not bury her with her first husband, but in the Pizzini family tomb of her eldest daughter, Juliette Mathilde (Antoni) Pizzini on 29 Dec 1901.[13] A visit to the family tombsite in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, reveals that Mathilde never inscribed her mother's name or information on the tomb, though her father-in-law's information is included on the stone.

Mathilde never forgave her mother for remarrying after her father's death, to the point that she and her husband sued for custody of her brothers (their father's heirs, Barthelemy having died intestate). Oddly, Mathilde did not sue for custody of her youngest sibling, Julie Marie, who remained with her mother and Davide Merola. Davide was, by all accounts, a good father, as his stepdaughter named her second son after him. Mathilde's animus was reflected in her daughter Adele's account of Marie Julie's remarriage, as she says in a letter to a cousin that her grandmother "forgot our grandfather too soon" and remarried six months after his death. [14] The truth is that Marie Julie married over a year after.
