Opened a general store, an adjoining inn with an interest in a brewery.
He became a partner in the firm of Hutchinson, Terry and Co., and built Cleveland House in Surry Hills, east Sydney. About this time, he formed a business association with Robert Cooper (no relation) and Solomon Levy, their ship Campbell Macquarie traded to Bass Strait and Van Diemens Land (Tasmania).
In 1825 Daniel Cooper and Solomon Levey took over Hutchinson, Terry and Co. (Waterloo Co.), now known as Cooper and Levey, which expanded to become general importers, to export wool and invest into whaling and sealing. Port Cooper (later to be Lyttleton) and Port Levy on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand are named for the company whose sealing gangs worked there. They bought Captain John Piper's extensive Woollahra - Rose Bay property.

He became a Governor of the Bank of New South Wales in 1828.
Daniel Cooper returned to England in 1831, appointing managers for the Sydney Company. Duckenfield, (1814)
Daniel Cooper died in Brighton, Sussex, England in 1853 at the age of 68.[3]
He had no children of his own; his nephew Daniel Cooper M.P. inherited the major portion of his estate.
