Biography

Heinrich (Henrik) Schütze was baptised on 23 Jun 1650 at Tyska Sankta Gertrud, Stockholm, Sweden.[1] His surname has a wide variety of spellings in contemporary records (Schütze, Schutz, Schütte, Schütt, Schuett, Schytte).

His father, Jost Schütz, was a master carpenter in Stockholm, who from 1634 served the navy until his death as a royal admiral sculptor at the shipyard in Stockholm. He worked on many important items such as:

  • 1650s - heraldic art for the Swedish fleet for the ships Fenix, Carolus and Draken.
  • 1650s - interior and carpentry works in the Rosenhanska palace in Stockholm and sculpted Count Gustav Horn af Björneborg's main banner/shield
  • 1660 - casting model for Karl X Gustav's coffin
  • 1669 - heraldic art for treasurer Gustav Bonde's funeral in Spånga church

Henrik's father died in Stockholm in 1674, and his unknown mother died 1678.

Henrik had a number of siblings, all baptised in Stockholm:

Henrik became a sculptor like his father and his elder brother Claes, and travelled as far as England. He was working there in 1674 when Claes' widow, Christina Nilsdotter, wrote to tell him his brother had died and asked him to return to Stockholm to take over the family workshop, which included the apprentice Caspar Schröder, a future famous sculptor.

Upon his return, Henrik married Catharina Gröning on 25 Mar 1675 at Tyska Sankta Gertrud in Stockholm.[9] She was the widow of portrait painter Georg Waldau/Jürgen Waldow) who was the son of Vilhelm Waldau and Anna von der Linde. It is surmised he born around 1626, as his mother was wet nurse to King Gustaf Vasa's daughter, the future Queen Christina. In fact he enjoyed the Queen's patronage and payment of his education in Amsterdam. Catharina entered her marriage with Henrik with four children, all under the guardianship of Waldau's stepbrother, artillery captain Gustaf Mein Granatenflycht:

  • Jörgen Fredrik Waldau, born c 1658, son of her husband's first wife
  • Catharina Waldau, baptised 20 Jun 1669[10]
  • Johan Jacob Waldau, baptised 15 Mar 1671 [11]
  • Gustavus (Gustaf) Waldau, baptised 25 Mar 1673 [12]

Henrik's sculpting business was to provide the Swedish fleet's vessels with carved images. Schütz's fees at the shipyard were regulated by contracts with the Admiralty College and the standards for these changed over the years. In Stockholm in 1677, under the contract he received an annual salary and compensation for special work according to a tender,

By 1682 he owned a stone house in the neighbourhood west of the Beridarebanan. He was active in Stockholm until 1684, when he moved to Kalmar and worked there until 1686. In Kalmar he was compensated with daily wages, allowances and rent compensation.

From 1686 he worked at the new Trossö Shipyard in Karlskrona as the lead sculptor. In Karlskrona, his 1689 contract paid based on the ship's type and size, and on the type of work performed. For a few years in the 1690s, Schütz received an annual salary of 200 silver dalers, which was later raised to 300 dalers.

His duties at the shipyard were to produce ornaments, galleries and, where appropriate, embellishments on and under the deck. His most signature was the large angry lion. He devoted special care to adornments bearing the names of different kings and during Charles XI's government built three such ships of increased size and power.

  • The first Carlous XI launched in 1678 with Henrik's figurehead of a lion and central figure on the stern was Karl XI on a horse, which is still preserved at the Maritime History Museum in Stockholm.
  • The second ship, King Carl, was launched in 1683 was provided with ornamentation made by Henrik
  • Schütz's most extensive work was the decoration of the 52m [Konung Carl or Carolus Rex], which was launched in 1694 as the Swedish navy's largest ship to date. In the King's cabin stood furniture that Henrik had carved, including a table with gilded feet is one of the treasures of Skärva Manor, the country house of shipbuilder Fredrik Henrik af Chapman.

Henrik died in 1701 and his stepson, Johan Jacob Waldau, succeeded him as head sculptor of the Karlskrona shipyard.
