Emery was born 9 July 1842 the 5th child[1] and one of three sons of Hiram Johnson and Mary Smith[2] who fought in the Civil War. He was in the [3] 18th Maine Infantry and mustered out in 1863. On 17 Nov 1866 he married Elsie Winchester, Daughter of Elijah Leavens Winchester. [4]. Emery and brother Amos married the Winchester sisters Elsie and Sarah. Census of 1880 indicates Emery and Elsie had three children at that time.[5] Elsie died in 1910 and Census of 1910 indicated that Emery was widowed and living with his widowed sister Sadie Rice. [6]He spent the last two years of his life at Togus where he died in the Togus Veterans Home and was buried with his wife at Oak Hill Cemetery in Brewer, Maine. [7]
