Death of Mrs Alice Smith.
One of the oldest residents of the Tatiara, Mrs A. Smith, died on Tuesday, August 17, at the home of her daughter Mrs D. Bradshaw, at Bordertown. Mrs Smith was a daughter of Mr Henry Twining, of Edwardstown and was born there 85 years ago, when the present popular suburb was regarded in the State Capital as a country district. She married Mr James Smith 54 years ago and the newly married couple drove together from Milang to the newly opened Tatiara farming lands. Mr and Mrs Smith made their home on the land about two miles from Bordertown on the Naracoorte road which Mr Smith had selected and named "Ashley Farm". The couple lived there and did so well that about twenty years ago they decided to give up active life and made a voyage to England where they remained for a year. The Tatiara called them and they returned to Bordertown and built a comfortable home on the Naracoorte Road just across the bridge on the Tatiara Creek. Mr Smith died sixteen years ago. Mr and Mrs Smith lived a retired life, well esteemed but minding their own affairs and doing their good work in a quiet way. After her husband's death, Mrs Smith continued to live in the Naracoorte Road home till about eighteen months ago when, feeling the weight of years, she went to live with her daughter, Mrs Bradshaw. She leaves
three sons, Messrs James, of Ballarat; William, of Kaniva; and Fred, of Bordertown; and three daughters, Mesdames T. G. Merrett, A. Creaser, and D. Bradshaw, all of Bordertown. The funeral took place yesterday, when a large number of friends and relatives were present at the graveside in Bordertown Cemetery. Service was performed by Rev. Wm. Evans. [1]
