Thomas Johnson Westropp was born on 16 August 1860 at Attyflin Park, Patrickswell, County Limerick. He was the son of John Westropp of Attyflin, County Limerick, and of Clonmoney, County Clare, and his second wife, Charlotte Louisa Whitehead.
Thomas was an author and antiquarian. He attended Trinity College at the University of Dublin and graduated with an MA in 1882 and a degree in civil engineering in 1885.
His early work in engineering and surveying was abandoned to pursue his great interest in archaeology. Thomas made many sketches and took photographs of ancient sites in Ireland, particularly in County Clare and County Limerick.
During his travels he collected stories of Irish folklore from the locals and collated the information in publications. This work led to the later foundation of the Irish Folklore Commission in 1935.
Many of his photographs of County Clare can be found here: Clare County Library Photographic Archives
His folklore history of County Clare is at County Clare Library site.
His many publications are listed at Wikipedia: Thomas Johnson Westropp.
He did not marry and died on 9 April 1922 in Dublin.[1] In June 1922, the Public Records Office of Ireland in Dublin was destroyed in a fire during the Irish Civil War and irreplaceable geneaological and historical information was lost. This surely would have broken the heart of Thomas Johnson Westropp and increased the importance and significance of the work during his lifetime as some of it, especially his genealogical research, is the only record of some of the lost documents.
