Biography

Mary was born in 1632 in Dorset, the daughter of William Sydenham and his wife Mary. She was baptised on 3 April of that year.^[1]

She married Richard Lee in Wynford Eagle, Dorset, England, (a hamlet about 7 miles NW of Dorchester) on 31 August 1655 at St Lawrence's Church (a chapelry of the Church at Toller Fratrum) ^[2]. Richard was a gentleman (recorded as 'Esq.', and Mary was recorded as the daughter of 'William Senr., Esq.'. Richard's original parish was recorded as Winslade, Hampshire.^{[3] [4]}

Wynford Eagle was for many years the seat of the Puritan Sydenham family.^[2]

'Winslade'
From Profile of Richard Lee:
At least two children of Richard Lee were born in Clyst St George, Devon. The marriage record transcription reads Parish (original) Winslade, co. Hants. ^[4] However, in The History and Antiquities of the Parish of Clyst St. George, (alias Clyst Champernon), in the County of Devon: A Paper Read Before the Exeter Diocesan Architectural Society, Sept. 22, 1862 ^[5] the author talks of a mansion (p 5) or farm called Winslade owned by the Lee family which is in the parish of Clyst St George. On p 56 he mentions a decree dated 19 February 1702 in which a Theophilus Eede, Rector of Clyst St George obtains the tithes of a 'farm called Winslade.... after a suit with Richard Lee, Esq, Senr, and Richard Lee Esq, Junr.'. I wonder whether the mention of Winslade, Hants, is a red herring based upon an assumption on transcription, and the Winslade simply refers to the residence in Clyst St George. If so, it would explain why I have been unable to find a record for Richard Lee's birth in Winslade. On the other hand, if the family had moved from Winslade, Hants, they may have named their new residence after their previous home.
