Boxing Life
Len Harvey was a Cornish Boxer, A great defensive boxer, he boxed at every weight division available.
He became the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight champion of the British Empire and was recognised as World Light Heavyweight in Britain from 1939 to 1942
He was persuaded to defend his titles against Freddie Mills on 20 June 1942 when he was 35 years old and a veteran of over a hundred bouts. He was knocked out in two rounds. Only the second time he was stopped and the first by a KO. He retired after this bout with an official record of 133 fights (111 wins / 9, draws and 13 defeats.
He claimed to have had 418 bouts, but these probably included booth fights His three fights against Jock McAvoy became legendary winning 2 and losing 1.
Such was his legend that he was inducted in. The Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008
He started boxing when he was 12 and had more than 400 bouts and is regarded as first to wear robe into the ring
He is a forgotten hero who still holds the record for highest number of spectators 90, 000 at the White City.
During World War 2 he joined the RAF, By this time he was a national sporting hero and was given an officer rank
Acting Career
He was an actor, known for Excuse My Glove (1936), The Bermondsey Kid (1933) and A Santa for Christmas (1957).
