Biography

Son of legendary surgeon Dr. Nelson Fanning, who served on the Union side in the Civil War and who, upon his death in 1896, was known as New York's longest-serving physician. Benjamin and his brother (also named Nelson) both practiced medicine in New York as well.

According to Brooks:

  • married Canilda Humphrey Phelps, born 11 Jun 1835 & daughter of Rolla & Catharine Phelps
  • 2 recorded children who lived to adulthood: Charles Breckenridge Fanning 1857 & Grace Elizabeth Fanning 1868
  • served briefly in the Civil War (Company B, 4th New York Heavy Artillery) before resuming his studies in medicine
  • graduate from Berkshire Medical College (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) in 1863
  • practiced medicine in Gilboa & Conesville, New York
  • retired from medicine in 1892 due to poor health
  • moved back to Gilboa and was appointed Assistant Postmaster

Buried in Manorkill Cemetery, Schoharie County, New York. A newspaper obituary provides several interesting details:[1]

  • Dr. Benjamin Fanning, age 90, was a veteran of the Civil War
  • he died at his home on 24th December 1927 at midnight
  • his wife was still alive in 1927
  • his son Charles had died "a few years ago"
  • his daughter "Mrs Theodore Southard" was living in Nebraska and had several children
  • Dr. Fanning possessed a very pleasing personality and was both liked and respected by all who knew him.

Benjamin was born in 1837. He passed away in 1927.

Dr Benjamin Fanning is an ancestor of mine. He was my grandmother's great-grandfather. He married Canilda Phelps and had two children, Grace and Charles. Grace married Theodore Southard and they moved to Nebraska. They had 4 children. I have a picture of them in front of their sod house. Charles was my grandmother's grandfather. He married Sarah Jane Egnor.

Benjamin Fanning lived in Gilboa, NY. Gilboa was flooded in the 1920s to expand the reservoir system for NYC, and the residents were relocated. I have letters that Benjamin wrote to my grandmother describing the plans and move, and then after the creation of the reservoir.
